Christmas has come and gone and we had the usual threats and violence associated with a major religious feast in today's world.

There were attacks in Baghdad, flights from Paris to the US were cancelled, attempts were made on the life of Pakistan's president, and there were bombings in the Middle East.

The great religions of the world seem to have degenerated into absolute belief   systems. Since September 11 we are all aware of the fanaticism of Islam. What is less visible is the rise of fundamental Christianity in the US. A recent survey in America has revealed that 45 per cent of people believe that the world is only 10,000 years old - because the Book of Genesis says so.

Talk about fanatics. What chance have science and logic got when people take Genesis as a literal historical account rather than a symbolic narrative?
